Clinical massage is designed to help alleviate diagnosed medical conditions, such as sciatica, frozen shoulder, bursitis; or to help with recovery after surgery or injury. A health care specialist’s referral or prescription is helpful, but not required. These services are often utilized in addition to physical therapy. Sessions are typically scheduled 2-3 times per week in the beginning, and then spaced out as progress is made in the condition being treated.
Clinical massage treatment begins with an which may take 15-30 minutes. During this intake your symptoms will be discussed in depth. This discussion will include any known cause, description of symptoms, what makes the symptoms better or worse, and other providers or treatments you have tried for the problem. A visual assessment will be performed, which will look at your posture, range of motion, and gait. Next, a palpation assessment is performed, in which the therapist evaluates muscle and or fascial tension or restrictions, areas of inflammation, tenderness or weakness.
After evaluation and your first massage treatment, at treatment plan will be developed between you and your therapist and future appointments will be scheduled. Revaluation sessions should take place every 4-6 weeks.
Treatments may include any or all of the following techniques:
Massage (Swedish, deep tissue)
Passive and/or active stretching
Joint mobilization
Myofascial release
Lymphatic drainage
Trigger point
Heat or cold therapy
Hot stone
Instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization
Cupping therapy
Taping
Home exercise program
Sessions are billed in 15-minute units, based on how long the session lasts. Plan on the initial session lasting 60-90 minutes due to intake procedures. Treatment session length will be determined when your treatment plan is set.
